TOUR PLANNING GUIDE · BEFORE YOU BOOK

Four questions to ask
before you book a tour.

Two tours can look almost the same on the listing and still turn out to be quite different days. Before you commit, it helps to know who runs the tour, what the conditions say, what the AUD price really covers and who looks after your booking. This checklist goes through each of these, one question at a time.

01

QUESTION 01

Who is the operator?

Start with the business that actually runs the day. Independent local operators deliver the tours featured on our site, including the guiding, transport, accommodation and activities where these apply. Each tour page should name that operator clearly.

Knowing the operator tells you whose conditions apply and who you will be travelling with. If you can’t find the operator’s name on a listing, treat that as something to clarify before you go any further.

QUESTION 02

What do the
tour conditions say?

Prices, availability, itineraries, inclusions and departure arrangements are all subject to the operator’s tour conditions. Read them before you book, not after.

PRICE

Is the listed price fixed, or can it change before your booking is confirmed?

AVAILABILITY

Is your preferred date actually open, or only shown as a possible departure?

ITINERARY

Which places are visited, in what order, and what might change on the day?

INCLUSIONS AND EXCLUSIONS

What is listed as included, and what is clearly left out?

DEPARTURE ARRANGEMENTS

Where does the tour start, and how do you get there? For more on reading itineraries side by side, see How to Compare Australian Tours.

QUESTION 03

What is the full
price in AUD?

A headline price is only useful when you know what sits behind it. Check that the price is shown in Australian dollars and that it includes any compulsory charges. Then ask three plain questions:

  • What is included in the tour price?
  • How much does the tour cost in AUD, all up?
  • Are there any additional fees or expenses?

Park entry, meals and optional activities are worth checking. Our guide to Tour Prices, Inclusions & Extra Costs explains what to look for.

QUESTION 04

Who handles
my booking?

Before you pay, find out who looks after each step. Our Booking Arrangements & Disclosures page explains how this works.

PAYMENT

Who processes your payment: the operator or a booking provider? Check whose name you are paying.

CONFIRMATION

Who confirms your place, and how will you know it’s confirmed and not just requested?

CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS

Who do you contact if your plans change, and what do the conditions say about cancelling?

If an answer isn’t clear, ask before you book.

Most questions come up just before choosing or booking, and that’s the right time to ask. If something on a listing doesn’t add up, send us a note through Contact & Enquiries.
